Jenson Button had been unable to take pole position in qualifying sessions. The position occupied by Sebastian Vettel.

Buttons that perform well since Friday, failed to surpass the speed of Vettel in the qualifying session, Saturday (8/10/2011). Vettel resulted in a record time of 1: 30,466 seconds, only the top Button 0,009 seconds advantage on the second position.

Hamilton eventually was ranked three, ahead of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, who occupied the position of the four and five.

With the success of this qualifying session on Vettel, then only the three times he failed to take pole position, i.e. in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany. But the pole was gained by his own teammate, Mark Webber.

Some drivers, such as Michael Schumacher, successfully drove until Q3, but chose not to record the time. They chose to keep the tire being used.

The host driver, Kamui Kobayashi, successfully drove until Q3, where he eventually chose not to record the time. Just like Schumacher, Kobayashi also chose to keep the vehicle tires.
